Leon Koerner as a Forest Industries Business Leader
Dr. Leon Koerner was inducted into The Canadian Business Hall of Fame in 1983. Established by Junior Achievement of Canada in 1979, The Canadian Business Hall of Fame was created to draw attention to the tremendous contribution business men and women have made to the economy and growth of Canada.
In 2006 Dr. Koerner was named one of the inaugural members of the newly-formed Business Laureates of British Columbia Hall of Fame. The Business Laureates was created to honour the outstanding contributions of B.C. business leaders to the province and country. The Journal of the British Columbia Historical Federation featured a lengthy article on Dr. Koerner, written by Rosemary Cunningham, in its Volume 40, Number 1, 2007.
Thea Koerner House Graduate Student Centre at UBC
Upon the death of Mrs. Koerner in 1959, Dr. Koerner provided funding to UBC for the construction of a graduate student centre. Designed by Thompson, Berwick & Pratt: Peter Kaffka, Architects, Thea Koerner House was awarded the Gold Medal in 1961 by The Massey Foundation for the outstanding architecture in Canada during the previous three years. Opened in May 1961, Thea Koerner House has served the needs of thousands of graduate students. For more information on the UBC Graduate Student Society, please visit www.gss.ubc.ca.
Dr. and Mrs. Koerner and UBC
During their lifetimes, Dr. and Mrs. Koerner had very special relationships with many members of the UBC community. In addition to Thea Koerner House, Dr. and Mrs. Koerner provide the funding for the construction of the then Faculty Club, now the Leon and Thea Koerner University Centre, which opened in June 1959.
